Sealing penetrations and pile heads through tanking membranes is a critical aspect of waterproofing in construction projects. Penetrations, such as pipe entries, electrical conduits, or drain connections, along with pile heads (the exposed portion of foundation piles), create potential pathways for water and radon gas ingress if not properly sealed. Tanking membranes, which are often flexible and highly resistant to water, are used to create a continuous waterproof barrier across the structure, including around these vulnerable areas.

Specialized sealing techniques, such as the use of collars, sealants, or mechanical fixings, are employed to ensure a watertight connection between the membrane and any penetrations or pile heads. The effectiveness of these seals is vital for maintaining the overall tanking performance of basements, underground tunnels, or water-retaining structures.
